Dental Implants
What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are a permanent and effective solution for replacing missing teeth. They are designed to look, feel, and function like natural teeth. Unlike dentures or bridges, which rest on the gums or are anchored to adjacent teeth, dental implants are surgically placed into the jawbone, making them a more secure and durable option.
The Dental Implant Procedure
- Consultation and Planning: During the initial consultation, your dentist will assess your oral health, take X-rays, and determine if you have enough bone density to support the implant.
- Implant Placement: In a minor surgical procedure, the titanium post is implanted into the jawbone. This procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia, and sedation options are available for anxious patients.
- Healing and Osseointegration: After the implant is placed, the healing process begins. Over the next 3 to 6 months, the implant will fuse with the surrounding bone, creating a solid foundation.
- Placing the Abutment and Crown: Once the implant has fully integrated with the bone, an abutment is attached to the post. Then, a custom-made crown is placed on top, completing the restoration.
Benefits of Dental Implants
Natural Look and Feel:
- Dental implants closely mimic the appearance and function of natural teeth. They are custom-designed to blend seamlessly with the rest of your smile.
Long-Lasting Solution:
- With proper care, dental implants can last a lifetime. They are more durable and stable compared to traditional dentures or bridges.
Bone Preservation:
- When a tooth is lost, the jawbone in that area begins to shrink (resorb) over time. Dental implants stimulate the bone and prevent bone loss, preserving your facial structure.
Improved Functionality:
- Implants restore full chewing power, allowing you to eat all types of food without discomfort or worry that the implant will shift or fall out.
No Impact on Surrounding Teeth:
- Unlike traditional bridges, dental implants do not rely on adjacent teeth for support. This means there’s no need to grind down neighboring teeth, preserving your natural tooth structure.
